HUMPBACK WHALES SPOTTED OFF VOYAGES HERON ISLAND
Monday, 25 May 2009
Making their first appearance this season, Humpback Whales have been spotted passing within just a few hundred metres off Voyages Heron Island, as they make their journey further north to warmer waters.
A pod of approximately 12 migrating whales have been sighted in the Wistari Channel treating guests and staff to a spectacular show from the beach and the island jetty. These magnificent mammals are in no rush to head north, gracefully breaching and parading their tail flukes for the audience.
The migration north past Heron Island is traditionally just a slow stroll down the channel. The whales tend not to stay around the island for too long unless they have an injured member of their party and need to take shelter for awhile. Last year a young calf was babysat by his father for a couple of days near the island.
Anna Guillan, Executive General Manager Sales & Marketing, Voyages Hotels & Resorts, said: "Whilst we can't always guarantee you'll spot them, the whale season is the ultimate time for families and nature lovers to visit Heron Island and get close to nature. There are very few places in the world where you can gather on the beach and watch Humpback Whales breaching off the shore."
